For 26 years, two alt-weekly newspapers battled it out in the streets of a mid-size Canadian prairie city. This is the story of the rise, rivalry and fall of Edmonton’s alt-weeklies, led by podcast producers and former weekly staffers Andrew Paul, Fawnda Mithrush and Paul Blinov. Join them as they dig in to the history of Vue Weekly and SEE Magazine through dozens of interviews with those who worked at the magazines, who were affected by their coverage, and who saw the decline of print media through to its job-ending demise. This is A Tale of Two Weeklies.

The TTW Team

Andrew Paul graduated from MacEwan University’s journalism program in 2008 and went on to win some awards for his work as a staff writer and editor in Edmonton’s alt-weekly news scene. These days, he produces Legacy in Action, a quarterly magazine for Edmonton Community Foundation, along with a handful of podcasts including The Well Endowed Podcast (Gold in the Consumer Division of the 2018 Canadian Online Publishing Awards) and I Don’t Get It (Best in Arts & Culture, 2013 Edmonton New Media Awards).

Fawnda Mithrush holds a BA in English Literature and Religious Studies, so her subsequent career in alternative media and arts management came naturally. After covering Edmonton’s onstage beat for a decade, she found podcasting about it to be an irresistible calling. Hobbies include cooking with her lab and faithful floor-cleaner, Dorothy. She also moonlights as the executive director of LitFest, the only nonfiction-focused festival in Canada.

Paul Blinov is an award-winning writer, editor, and performer. He’s the former Arts & Film editor of Vue Weekly (2009 -2016), and in addition to Vue, has written for the National PostExclaim!Daze MagazineBeatroute, Edmonton.com, and Canadian Medical Association Journal. He’s also a member of the Polaris Music Prize Jury.
